What is the Process of Extracting Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also referred to as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth. Most people develop, which finish growing between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five. The average mouth does not have sufficient room for an extra set of molars. That is why dental professionals recommend the removal of wisdom teeth. At Dr. Wisdom Teeth in San Tan Valley, Arizona, we offer comfortable and safe wisdom teeth extractions.

Why Have Wisdom Teeth Removed?

If wisdom teeth have been correctly positioned and emerged accurately, they may not need to be removed. However, in most cases, the jaws are too small to accommodate the extra molars, and wisdom tooth removal may become inevitable.

Impacted wisdom teeth get stuck beneath the gum tissue. Such teeth will not emerge naturally and must be surgically removed. If a tooth is partially impacted or thrusting through the gum tissue, it becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. If the wisdom teeth are not treated, you become vulnerable to several oral health problems, including:

  • Infections around the tooth and gum tissue can spread to healthy teeth
  • Pain and swelling
  • Teeth overcrowding
  • Misalignment of teeth caused by wisdom teeth that grow sideways and push against adjoining molars
  • The formation of cysts or tumors
  • Prolonged bad breath due to infections
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully

You can avoid these oral concerns by having wisdom teeth extracted at the earliest.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

During your first consultation, our dentist will take 3D scans of your mouth and discuss your anesthesia options. We will answer any questions regarding your surgery. If you are stressed about your surgery, we recommend sedation options to make you comfortable throughout the process.

When you arrive for your surgery, we will administer the anesthesia. Once it takes effect, our dentists will remove the erupted wisdom teeth using forceps. In case of an impacted tooth, we will incise the gums to access and remove the tooth. Sometimes the wisdom teeth will be split into smaller pieces for removal. Once the teeth are pulled out, the surgical areas will be sutured, and you will have to rest until your anesthesia wears off.

Consume soft foods for a few days after your surgery. The surgical area will have to be kept clean while they heal. Most patients can resume their everyday routines after just a few days of rest. You should not use a straw or smoke for at least a week. The suction of the straw could dislodge the blood clot within the tooth socket, leading to a dry socket. If any complications arise, contact our office immediately.
