What is a wisdom tooth?

A wisdom tooth is the third molar that erupts as the last permanent teeth to help grind food. Adults usually get four sets of wisdom teeth, of which two form on the top and two on the bottom.

Why should we get wisdom teeth removed?

The ADA recommends undergoing wisdom teeth extraction if they experience any of the following issues:

  • Crowded or crooked teeth
  • Growing sideways or to an undesired position
  • Erupt partially
  • Cause pain in the jaw
  • Tooth decay or other infections
  • Have impacted teeth

What includes wisdom teeth surgery?

Wisdom teeth surgery is essential for long-term oral health. If you are someone with dental anxiety, then we will numb the area with a local anesthetic, so you can sleep throughout the whole process. For wisdom teeth removal, the dentist will surgically open the gum tissue above the tooth and carefully take out any bone. As the tooth uncovers and the dentist will remove it carefully.

What can be expected after wisdom teeth surgery?

It is quite normal to experience some pain, swelling, bruising, or in some cases, even a little bleeding after you get the procedure done. It might take a few days to feel completely normal, as each person responds differently to the treatment. Your dentist will prescribe you some over-the-counter pain relief medications to get relief.

What should you eat after wisdom teeth surgery?

  • Prefer a soft diet is after the surgery, such as applesauce, mashed potatoes, lukewarm broth-based soup, pudding, yogurt, smoothies, milkshakes, etc.
  • Make sure to avoid these foods after the surgery:
  • Solid, crunchy, chewy, or spicy foods for about a week
  • Any acidic foods
  • Alcohol and coffee for at least a day
